Not up to Krups standards; LED and programming buttons failedSep 05, 2010 I've had this Krups coffee maker for three-years and can attest to most of the stated flaws:
Coffee not hot enough, both just after brewing and the carafe's "staying power"
Awkward pouring
Air bubbles in water gauge
Plus, this new one:
LED readout and programming malfunction(s)
I'll explain: the location of the programming buttons and LED readout are at the bottom of the unit -- a prime location for ease of use, but also, the best place for them to get saturated with spills, which is exactly what happened.
I noticed condensation inside the LED display window within just a few uses. Then the readouts began to malfunction, making it impossible to tell what mode(s) were set (e.g. alarm on/off, small pot, etc.). And to add insult to injury, the programming buttons malfunction so badly it takes several attempts to program the auto-brew times.
Very frustrating, and strange as Krups products are usually stars of Germany design.
Oh and I paid A LOT more for this model when it first came out, but even at this awesome Amazon price, I'd advise fellow Amazon shoppers to look elsewhere.
Wish I had bought a Braun againAug 29, 2010 I went to Bed bath & beyond to get this coffee maker, had hoped to buy either a Braun or a Bunn coffee maker, as the braun I had made excellent coffee & lasted nearly a decade. No such luck, but I gambled on this krups model. I haven't had big problems with getting bubbles in the water gauge, just pour water slowly & it isn't an issue. Worst case scenario - get a bubble & either estimate how much water you have poured in, or dump it out and start over.
No problem with plastic smells. The coffee does brew weak, so I add about 50% more of the high grade, freshly ground beans as I used to - have found I can't grind it finer to stretch it as that only results in the coffee being bitter.
What I do like about this model, as opposed to the Bunn, is that it keeps coffee hot for as long as I need it to - a pot of coffee doesn't last all day with me. If it does cool off, no problem to pop it in the microwave to heat it. It never cooks the coffee to death and makes it taste horrible. The bunn model I had looked at keeps a reserve of water hot 24/7, waiting for the next pot to brew. To me that is a waste of power and I am trying to not only watch my electricity bill but live greener as well.
But the plastic parts on this model are flimsy & pretty cheap. The metal pot may not be all that sturdy - the inside looks to be thermal (like those glass thermoses that break so easy) so even though the metal outside is sturdy I think dropping this baby will ruin it. And the plastic filter holder is crap. That fell off the machine somehow, hit the floor and the bottom of it that does the brew / pause function is now hanging by a thread. So within 1 month, I need to order a replacement part. Don't buy this coffee maker, it is as poorly made as a mr coffee and not worth the money. If you want to buy from bed bath & beyond to use the 20% off coupon like I do, they will special order a bunn coffee pot (or maybe even a braun). I'll never buy another krups. Likely I won't have to wait long, the way this thing is holding up it will be toast in less than a year most likely.
Unit Failed and Replacement FailedAug 28, 2010 I bought this unit just over a year ago. As coffee makers go it was not cheap. When it worked it was fine, but within a few months the electronics went buggy on the machine. The display read "add water" even when there was water added. It would not brew. I called the service department in Oceanside NY and requested a replacement. This took many weeks. When the replacement unit came, it was white while the original was black. An annoyance, but not the end of the world. However, the replacement unit also had problems within about 6 months. When plugged in, the display constantly flashed "88:88" and would not brew or respond. I believe the reason for this is the electronics are sticking out of the front base of the unit where they can easily get wet. By then the original one year warranty had expired (by not considering the weeks I had to wait for a replacement). I called for service again and was told there was no longer a warranty but I could send in the unit at my expense. I declined. There are plenty of reliable coffee makers out there. This is not one of them. I expected better from what I though was a reliable brand.
only after about 1 year it stopped working - again....Aug 27, 2010 This is the worst coffee maker I have ever had. At first it worked fine, about after 8 months it would not work anymore (the digital display showed no water in the tank, while there was water in it, so it would not start). Krups told me I had to either send it or drop it off at a little store about 30 mins from my house. I decided to drop it off, I did not want to dump more money into that machine. When I picked it up again I had to wait about 1h, because the store manager had left the store for a while.....I met a couple that was already there the third time as this seems to be quite normal for that store..... Anyway, the display worked again, but now it was not programmable anymore as the clock was way too fast (about 10-15 min within 2h). And on top of that after about 2 months the first problem started again...... I gave up having it repaired. This was just too much hassle and my time is more valuable than that really bad coffee maker.
Now I am going to look for a new coffee maker, one that actually works!!!!!
Do NOT buy this coffee maker!!!Aug 23, 2010 I read all of the pros and cons regarding this coffee maker ad decided to take my chances since I've always been a Krups fan and had a Krups thermal coffeepot at least 10 years ago. BIG MISTAKE!! It broke after 32 days, 2 days beyond my 30 day return through Amazon. I will never buy another Krups (or Cuisinart) again.
